US pulls all B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford after suspected plot

The United States has withdrawn all of its B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford, the British air base north-west of London, a week after several men were arrested there on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts, a Pentagon official said on Sunday. Reuters reported the move on Monday, 5 October 2026, and the Pentagon’s confirmation was still drawing attention on 6 October.

Bombers return to home stations

A dozen B-1 bombers had been stationed at RAF Fairford and were used for US strikes on Iran. “While operational security precluded us from confirming the movement of our assets and forces in real-time, we can acknowledge now that all US bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have re-deployed to their home stations in the United States,” a Pentagon spokesman wrote in an email, according to Reuters.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that the aircraft had been moved out amid security concerns over suspected terror plots against the facility. The British government had allowed the US to fly bombers from Fairford against Iranian missile sites that were attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Britain points to Iran

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Wednesday that the UK had “strong indications” that Iran was involved in the suspected plot targeting the base. Iran called the accusations baseless and summoned the British ambassador in Tehran over the issue, Reuters said.

US President Donald Trump said those involved in the plot had planned “big damage”, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio pointed to the “hands of a foreign actor”.

Why the RAF Fairford move matters

The move comes while the Middle East conflict is still active. Gulf News, in its live coverage on 6 October, listed the Pentagon’s confirmation that all US B-1 bombers had left RAF Fairford after a security incident nearby among the key developments of the war, alongside fresh tanker incidents in the Strait of Hormuz.

Officials have cited security concerns but have not publicly detailed the specific intelligence that led to the decision to move the bombers out of the Gloucestershire base.
