History of the Jaswant Pashu Mela

Bedham said Maharaja Kishan Singh started the fair in 1920 in memory of his grandfather, Maharaja Jaswant Singh. In the princely era it was a centre for farmers and cattle owners to improve livestock, and traders also earned from it. Fair officer and animal husbandry joint director Dr Arvind Chaudhary said it is among the state’s 10 major fairs and has been held every year as a state-level fair since 1963. Shopkeepers come from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana. Khaskhabar and Dainik Bhaskar also reported the opening and the minister’s remarks.

Wrestling dangal, culture and rides at the Bharatpur fair

The programme includes bhajan, jakdi, nautanki and dhola singing, a national-level wrestling dangal, Ravan dahan and a cultural evening. For entertainment there are swings, a circus, the ‘well of death’, break dance and dragon rides, boats and magic shows. ETV Bharat reported that cultural programmes and the dangal will run until 25 October. Mayor Anuradha Singh and other public representatives attended the opening. Bedham said fairs help preserve culture and traditions, create jobs and let people buy daily needs in one place, and he asked officials to keep the fair’s historic character, protect traders and ensure safety. People come from rural Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the country, he said.

Fair income and site work

Dr Chaudhary said the fair earned Rs 92 lakh last year. This year it has already earned more than Rs 1 crore 17 lakh 98 thousand, the DIPR release said. Collector Kamar Chaudhary said work on a drain is under way to end waterlogging at the fair ground, and that the exhibition ground will be beautified while keeping its historic look. More basic facilities have been proposed for the coming years. Additional director of animal husbandry Khushiram Meena thanked the guests. Zila Parishad chief executive Mridul Singh, Additional Collector (City) Rahul Saini and other district officers were present. The release did not say how many cattle or traders are expected this year, so no such figure is given here. For farmers and livestock traders, the figures in the official release give the clearest picture yet of how this year’s fair is going.

Why It Matters: The fair is a major yearly market for cattle owners and small traders in eastern Rajasthan, and its rising income shows strong demand for stalls.
