With Rajasthan panchayat elections approaching, the state Congress on Monday, 5 October 2026, asked Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar Sharma to order a high-level inquiry into what it called police interference in the recent urban local body polls. At the same time, the BJP is preparing to give poll duties to about three lakh workers in villages, Amar Ujala reported on Tuesday.
Congress flags 152 FIRs and complaints
State Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra and Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully handed the DGP a memorandum. Dotasra said 152 FIRs and complaints were filed against Congress and independent candidates and their supporters during the civic polls, and claimed that 99% of them were politically motivated, The Times of India reported.
The party cited Tijara in Alwar district, where it said about 18 Congress-backed independent councillors were stopped and detained by Haryana Police, and an alleged abduction of councillors in Srivijaynagar in Sri Ganganagar. It also raised cases from Suratgarh, Bharatpur, Ajmer and Pali, and asked for clear orders to police and officials to stay neutral in the panchayat polls.
BJP plan for Rajasthan panchayat elections
According to Amar Ujala, the BJP won 35.18% of the vote in the civic polls against 34.24% for the Congress, a gap of 99,615 votes, while independents took 27.38%. After that narrow lead, the party plans to assign booth management and voter contact work to about three lakh workers, starting with around 1.5 lakh in the first phase.
State general secretary Shravan Singh Bagdi said preparations were in the final stage. The party has set up divisional election committees that include senior leaders such as Rajendra Rathore and Arun Chaturvedi. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma toured 19 districts between 23 September and 3 October.
Congress focuses on rural issues
The Congress opened its panchayat campaign with a workers’ meeting in Degana in Nagaur district, the report said, and has formed a nine-member committee to examine cross-voting complaints from the civic polls. It plans to raise village issues such as fertiliser supply, alleged fake seeds, milk bonus and power for irrigation, and is considering naming candidates early.
