84 percent of Nifty 50 stocks trade under the 200-DMA

The latest Indian selloff is increasingly a large-cap story, with 84 percent of Nifty 50 stocks trading below their 200-day moving averages, The Economic Times reported on 5 October 2026.

In the Nifty 50, 42 of the 50 stocks are below that average. In the Nifty 500, 310 stocks, or 65 percent, are below it. The report compared that with 452 stocks, or 45 percent, in the broader BSE 1000. The 200-day average, based on closing prices over 200 sessions, is treated in the article as a long-term trend marker: above it is read as positive, below it as weakness.

Nifty 50 names furthest under the average

Tata Motors PV, Maruti Suzuki and Infosys were trading nearly 19 percent below their own 200-day averages. TCS was down around 18 percent. HUL, ITC and Jio Financial were each around 17 percent below. RIL, HDFC Life, Tata Consumer, ONGC, M&M and HDFC Bank were around 14 percent below. The Economic Times said some weakness had reached mid-caps, but less so small- and micro-caps, suggesting selling was still concentrated in large caps.

Within the Nifty 500, about 190 stocks were still above the average. Of those, 52 were 1 to 5 percent above, 28 were 5 to 10 percent above, 65 were 10 to 20 percent above, 21 were 20 to 30 percent above, and 15 were more than 30 percent above.

Rohit Srivastava, founder of Indiacharts, said the split reflected the past six months, with small- and micro-caps strongly ahead and mid-caps also ahead of the Nifty. He said the Nifty drop looked oversold, as in March 2020 or March 2026, and that such extreme Nifty readings have historically been associated with market bottoms. He said mid- and small-caps were not at that point, and that a similar condition across the Nifty 500 would signal broader capitulation, which he had not seen.
