Mahakavya Shri Ramayan Katha producer alleges negative marketing

The producer of Mahakavya Shri Ramayan Katha has claimed that his film was sunk by a campaign of negative marketing. Prakash Mahobiya told India Today that YouTubers and influencers spread harmful comments about the mythological drama, which opened in theatres on 25 September, and said his team now plans to re-release it. Hindustan Times reported his remarks on Tuesday, 6 October 2026.

What the producer said

Mahobiya argued that audiences never got a fair chance to judge the film for themselves. “It was negative marketing throughout. We never got a chance to reach our audience. The ones who watched our film really enjoyed it,” he said.

He also linked the alleged campaign to bigger films on the same subject. “From what we have been told, there are other movies on the same subject coming in, the big-budget film,” he said, adding that people were “spreading wrong information and asking people not to watch our film.”

When asked whether he was accusing the team of Nitesh Tiwari and Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana, Mahobiya said he was not sure, but that this was what his team had been told. The Hindustan Times report did not carry a response from the Ramayana makers.

A difficult run at the box office

Directed by Abhishek Singh, Mahakavya Shri Ramayan Katha stars Anjali Arora, Dev Sharma and Rajneish Duggal. The film drew criticism before release over Arora’s casting as Sita and over its visual effects. After release, viewers also pointed to errors such as a poster that showed a member of the Vanar Sena wearing spectacles.

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film has collected only ₹46 lakh worldwide.

The bigger Ramayana on the horizon

The dispute comes as the industry waits for Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part Ramayana, backed by Namit Malhotra and Yash and mounted on a reported budget of ₹4,000 crore. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi plays Sita and Yash plays Ravana, with Ravi Dubey, Sunny Deol and Rakul Preet Singh in key roles.

The first part is scheduled for Diwali 2026 and the second for Diwali 2027. With two retellings of the epic competing for attention in the same season, Mahobiya’s claims are likely to add to the debate over online film promotion.
