Baththa box office: Vijay Sethupathi film earns ₹11.35 crore in five days

By /

The Baththa box office run has turned a modest start into a lead over the other Tamil releases of the Gandhi Jayanti week. Vijay Sethupathi’s period drama earned about ₹1.30 crore nett in India on Monday, 5 October 2026, taking its five-day India nett total to an estimated ₹11.35 crore, Times Now reported on Tuesday, citing Sacnilk.

Baththa box office: a steady climb after a slow opening

Baththa opened with ₹1.50 crore nett on 1 October and then grew on the back of good reviews and word of mouth. It added ₹2.70 crore on day two and ₹2.75 crore on day three. Sunday was its best day so far, with ₹3.10 crore from 1,290 shows.

Monday’s ₹1.30 crore came from 1,214 shows at about 25 per cent occupancy. The film’s India gross now stands at around ₹13.18 crore.

Its rivals have struggled to keep pace. Sigma, the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay, opened higher at ₹2.35 crore but slipped to ₹1.50 crore on its second day. Ram’s Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai, starring Nivin Pauly and Soori, made less than ₹1 crore over its opening weekend.

Atlee’s Oscar wish

Producer Atlee, speaking at the film’s success meet, set out a big ambition for the film, the Times of India reported on 6 October. “I wish to take ‘Baththa’ to the Oscar level. It’s just a wish for now, but I will make it happen. If not with ‘Baththa,’ I’ll do it with Allu Arjun’s ‘Raaka,'” he said. He added that if he ever stood on the Oscar stage, he would speak only in Tamil.

Vijay Sethupathi said he was running a fever, something he said usually happens when he is extremely happy, and thanked audiences for their response across social media.

About the film

Written and directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, Baththa is set in 1986 Madras. It follows a feared local gangster whose life changes after he forms an unexpected bond with an eight-year-old boy.

Sethupathi leads the cast with Lijomol Jose, while Ajay Ghosh, Arjun Chidambaram, Sahasra and Hari Krishnan play supporting roles. Sai Abhyankkar has composed the music.
