PTI Imran Khan march begins after Pakistan talks fail

Supporters of jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan set off on a protest march from the country’s northwest after talks with the government failed, Al Jazeera reported on 4 October 2026.

More than 5,000 people were reported to have begun the rally on Sunday. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party planned the march. It had been scheduled for 27 September and was postponed until 4 October so talks with the government could take place. Two rounds over the weekend failed to break the deadlock, and the party went ahead.

Imran Khan march set for Khairabad by Thursday

The report said Khan, described as the country’s most popular political figure according to polls, has been behind bars since August 2023 after convictions his party calls politically motivated. It said all but one of those convictions have since been suspended or overturned on appeal.

Videos on the party’s official social media showed supporters joining in different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which PTI rules, and leaving in convoys. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi had posted that the demonstration would go ahead. He said the march would reach Khairabad, 80 kilometres west of Islamabad, by Thursday, where the plan for the “next phase” would be announced.

The government has prepared for weeks and has put shipping containers across main routes into the capital. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed on Sunday that the talks had failed. He accused Afridi of “sabotaging” the negotiations and said the government would not allow PTI to “create a disturbance”.

Naqvi cited an Islamabad High Court order of 14 September that no political party or its leadership has the “lawful right to occupy public roads, highways, interchanges, toll plazas and buildings in Islamabad”. He said: “If they violate the orders, whether they are workers or politicians, whether they are protesting within KP or outside KP, we will pursue them one by one. This time, we want to ensure that these repeated episodes of creating disturbance in Islamabad come to an end.”
