Sant Ravidas Nagar is now the name of Bhadohi district, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Sunday, 4 October 2026, at a programme in the district. “Now Bhadohi district will be called Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi,” he said.

The Hindu reported that the chief minister inaugurated works and laid foundation stones for 112 projects worth over ₹1,340 crore at the same event. He tied the renaming to a promise made on Guru Purnima, when the government said the carpet-making district would carry the name of Satguru Ravidas, the medieval saint he described as having united society through spiritual devotion.

What Sant Ravidas Nagar’s carpet trade was promised

Adityanath said artisans and craftspeople who once had to leave the state for work now had a platform at home. He said the carpet industry today has technology, design, markets, better connectivity and security, and that Bhadohi carpets are building an identity in the global market. The government, he said, has placed Bhadohi carpets in the One District-One Product scheme and linked artisans to resources they need.

He contrasted that account with the years before 2017, which he described as a period of frustration, when artisans could not find work and buyers were reluctant to visit. He also used the speech to attack previous governments, saying a “BIMARU mindset” had held the state back and that law-and-order conditions had changed.

The announcement is the formal renaming of a district already known for carpets, not a new industrial scheme. The project list attached to Sunday’s visit is the 112 works, together valued at more than ₹1,340 crore, that were inaugurated or had their foundation stones laid in the district.
