Congress announces Vote Bachao Desh Bachao stir against CEC

The Congress said on Monday, 5 October 2026, that it will run a nationwide “Vote Bachao Desh Bachao” campaign from 10 October to 26 November to demand the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the return of eligible voters to the rolls. The party says they are among 130 million names deleted. The plan came a day before INDIA bloc MPs were set to march from Parliament to the Election Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday, 6 October.

Vote Bachao Desh Bachao schedule

General secretary K.C. Venugopal said block-level bike rallies and padyatras will be held from 10 to 20 October, along with effigy burning and pamphlets against the CEC. Village meetings will start on 25 October and run for a month, with party workers, called “vote rakshaks”, identifying genuine voters who were removed. A rally at Ramlila Maidan is planned for 1 November, and six yatras will set out from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on 25 and 26 November to mark Constitution Day.

Hindustan Times reported that the party has invited two estranged allies, the DMK and AAP, to join Tuesday’s march and the Ramlila Maidan rally. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge told the meeting that the CEC must be removed, while Rahul Gandhi asked the party’s student wing, the NSUI, to step up its role in the protests.

INDIA bloc march to Election Commission

Security was tightened around the Election Commission headquarters and other key points in Delhi on Tuesday morning, The Hindu reported. INDIA bloc leaders are also expected to meet President Droupadi Murmu to raise concerns over the special intensive revision (SIR) of rolls. The march was called after a meeting of 19 Opposition parties on 30 September.

In Bihar, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said INDIA bloc members will hold an “Aakrosh March” at block level on 7 October, followed by sit-ins in all districts on 8 October and a protest at Lok Bhavan in Patna.

BJP response

The BJP has rejected the Opposition’s charges. It said the Supreme Court’s decision on Monday to issue notice to the Election Commission and the Centre on a plea against the CEC showed a functioning democracy and countered claims of an “atmosphere of fear”.
