Two Great Indian Bustards released into Jaisalmer wild

Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav released two captive-bred male Great Indian Bustards into the wild at Desert National Park in Jaisalmer, The Hindu reported in a story published on 4 October 2026.

The article, credited to PTI and datelined New Delhi, calls the release a first step in rewilding captive-bred birds. The body text dates the release to Sunday, 3 October 2026. The photo caption dates it 4 October 2026 at Sam in Jaisalmer district. Both dates appear in the same article.

Great Indian Bustard numbers at Sam and Ramdevra

On X, Yadav said the milestone was the outcome of nearly a decade of work by scientists, researchers and ground staff to help the critically endangered bird reclaim the deserts of Rajasthan. The birds were raised at facilities in Sam and Ramdevra. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for guidance and support for conservation of species including the Great Indian Bustard.

The programme is a collaboration of the Union Environment Ministry, the Rajasthan Forest Department and the Wildlife Institute of India. The Hindu reported that the Sam and Ramdevra facilities currently house 97 birds. Forty originated from wild-laid eggs, and 57 were bred in captivity. Of the 97, 86 are being kept for captive reproduction, and 11 have been earmarked for release. Captive reproduction produced 24 live chicks in 2025 and 29 in 2026.

No other release site, tracking method or survival figure is stated in the article, so none is added here. The only population figures used are the facility counts above.
