Jaishankar meets US Indo-Pacific commander Samuel Paparo

By /

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held Indo-Pacific security talks on Sunday, 4 October 2026, with Admiral Samuel J. Paparo, commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, The Hindu reported from New Delhi.

The Hindu said the talks concerned advancing the India-US security partnership and strengthening maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor was also present. Jaishankar wrote on X: “Glad to meet Commander of the US Pacific Command, Admiral Samuel J. Paparo. Discussed advancing our security partnership and maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.”

Indo-Pacific talks during a five-day visit

Admiral Paparo is on a five-day visit to India from 3 October to 8 October. The Hindu said Washington is using the trip to deepen military-to-military cooperation with New Delhi and to advance the Major Defense Partnership. During the visit he is expected to meet Indian military and government officials on digital transformation, emerging technologies, regional strategic stability, defence energy resilience, and the challenges of a more competitive technology landscape.

The newspaper said the visit comes as India-US cooperation expands across the Indo-Pacific, including maritime security, domain awareness, emerging technologies and military interoperability. It also said India and the United States, with Australia and Japan, continue to work through the Quad, with maritime security, a free and open Indo-Pacific, critical and emerging technologies, and regional resilience on the agenda.

The Hindu reported that the United States has described the wider defence partnership as preparation for emerging security challenges, from new technologies to maritime security. It said the visit also points to Washington’s continued engagement with India and its interests in the Indian Ocean region, where India has positioned itself as a first responder and a security partner. The US Pacific Command oversees American military operations across the Indo-Pacific and is central to Washington’s work with regional partners on maritime security, strategic stability and emerging security challenges.
