Ukraine’s defence ministry said on Monday, 5 October 2026, that long-range Ukrainian strikes have taken out more than half of Russia’s oil refining capacity, a claim it said was hurting Moscow’s ability to supply its forces, The Guardian reported in its war briefing for day 1,686 of the conflict.
Kyiv puts the figure at 51 per cent
“Fifty-one per cent of struck refining capacity is a significant blow to the enemy’s economy, to its ability to carry out aggression and supply its troop groupings,” defence minister Yevhenii Khmara said. “Our deep strikes continue to bring the war to Russian territory.” Ukrainian forces have repeatedly attacked refineries from Moscow to Siberia, and the strikes caused a widespread fuel crisis in Russia earlier this year that forced authorities to restrict petrol sales.
Russian officials have not released figures on damage to the country’s oil refining capacity. But President Vladimir Putin made a rare acknowledgement of the economic impact at the Valdai Club forum last Thursday, saying the attacks had cost Russia roughly 1% of its gross domestic product. “Did they achieve their goal? Partially,” he said.
US President Donald Trump has also linked the attacks to fuel prices. In a Truth Social post, he said high petrol prices were now being driven not by the Strait of Hormuz but by Russian refineries “being blown up by Ukraine”.
Deadly strikes in Kharkiv and the Black Sea
The fighting continued on Monday. Officials said six people were killed and nearly 60 injured when Russian bombs struck a residential area of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. French President Emmanuel Macron said Moscow “has made the irresponsible choice to intensify its strikes on civilian infrastructure and targets”.
In the Black Sea, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said two Russian drones hit a Turkish-owned grain ship carrying corn in neutral waters, with Azerbaijani and Indian nationals on board. Romanian authorities said two crew members died and 11 were rescued after the 139-metre Royad Mammadov caught fire and sank near Romania’s coast.
AI turrets and a warning from Berlin
Ukraine’s air force said it had, for the first time, used AI-enabled robotic turrets in Kyiv to shoot down Russian jet-powered drones. In Germany, foreign intelligence chief Martin Jaeger told lawmakers on Monday that Russia’s undeclared “shadow war” against Germany and its allies has taken on “a new, more dangerous character”.
