Breast self-examination booth, said to be India’s first portable one, opens at AIIMS Bhubaneswar

A breast self-examination booth has opened at the Department of Medical Oncology, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the health ministry said on 16 October 2026. The institute says it is the first portable booth of its kind in India. It gives women a private space to learn how to check themselves through simple instructions on its walls. The launch was part of a month of awareness activities run by the hospital’s oncology department.

How the breast self-examination booth works

The booth was inaugurated by Dr Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, who said early detection plays a crucial role in better breast cancer outcomes. Inside, step-by-step instructions show women how to examine themselves and what kind of changes to look for. The aim is to overcome hesitation, raise awareness and encourage women to see a doctor quickly if they notice anything unusual. The department plans to set up a permanent booth soon. PTI, The Statesman and OrissaPOST reported the launch in the same terms, and all described the booth as the first portable one in India according to the institute. The Statesman said the booth was made operational as part of the month-long observance.

Breast cancer rising among younger women

Dr Sourav Kumar Mishra, Associate Professor of Medical Oncology, said the department has treated about 1,000 breast cancer patients since it opened four years ago, and around 100 patients visit every month. He raised concern about the large number of women who reach hospital with advanced disease, and about the growing number of cases among younger women. He said these trends show the need for steady awareness campaigns, early diagnosis and timely access to treatment. The Times of India reported the same patient figures. Self-examination is a first step; women should still follow the screening advice of their doctor.

Yoga, music and support for patients

The department also highlighted the role of yoga, meditation, structured exercise, music and relaxation in helping patients manage stress and cope with treatment. It has been running sessions of yoga, meditation, music and singing to give patients a chance to relax, express emotions and support each other. The awareness month event ended with faculty, staff and cancer survivors singing ‘Hum Honge Kamyaab Ek Din’, and several patients shared their personal journeys. Dean Dr Dillip Kumar Parida and Medical Superintendent Dr Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy were among those present. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed every October around the world to promote early diagnosis, timely treatment and support for patients and survivors.

Why It Matters: Breast cancer caught early is far easier to treat, and simple self-checks help women notice changes and see a doctor sooner.
