India Switzerland pacts ease visas, open defence and nuclear talks

India and Switzerland signed five agreements in New Delhi on Monday, 5 October 2026, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Swiss President Guy Parmelin at Hyderabad House. The India Switzerland pacts cover longer visas, an exchange of young professionals, transport, research and technology transfer. The two leaders also agreed to look for new openings in defence and nuclear energy.

Parmelin is on a three-day visit that marks one year since the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) between India and the four-nation European Free Trade Association (EFTA) came into force on 1 October 2025.

What the India Switzerland pacts mean for travellers

A migration and mobility memorandum provides for multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years, with stays of up to six months on each visit, and renewable one-year permits for students. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, it also commits both countries to work against irregular migration and trafficking.

A separate young professionals agreement lets 300 people from each country take up temporary jobs in the other every year, a figure that can rise to 500. Checks on nationality and residency are to be completed within 30 to 90 days. Modi said the two deals would open new opportunities in Switzerland for Indian students, researchers and professionals.

Defence, nuclear energy and trade

Modi said the sides had identified new possibilities in military exchanges and defence production, and had agreed to deepen cooperation in nuclear energy. He said decisions had been taken to widen market access for Indian exports such as farm goods, pharmaceuticals, textiles and engineering products, while inviting Swiss investment in biotech, banking, insurance and food processing.

The other three documents cover transport technology and infrastructure, including ropeways and tunnels, long-term research links, and innovation and technology transfer.

Parmelin said Switzerland wanted an investment protection agreement concluded soon, along with progress on intellectual property protection. TEPA aims to bring $100 billion of investment and one million direct jobs to India over 15 years.

What comes next

Switzerland is India’s largest trading partner in EFTA, with two-way trade of about $25 billion, Hindustan Times reported. An India-EFTA Prosperity Summit is due on Wednesday, 7 October, which Modi described as a platform to turn the trade partnership into concrete results.
