The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) began an anti-encroachment drive on New Sanganer Road in Jaipur on Monday, 5 October 2026, acting on directions from the Rajasthan High Court, as traders and residents protested. The authority has to file a compliance report in the high court on Tuesday, 6 October.
What was removed on New Sanganer Road
A joint team of the JDA, Jaipur Municipal Corporation and Jaipur police commissionerate started work at about 8 am and continued for around four hours, The Times of India reported. The first phase covered close to one kilometre from the Gurjar Ki Thadi side. Officials said encroachments linked to about 15 structures were removed, mostly shop extensions, railings, staircases and other projections on pavements and road margins.
“We have not demolished any buildings or shops. The drive went peacefully,” said Anand Sharma, DIG of the JDA’s enforcement wing.
Notices have been served on about 250 structures along the nearly three-kilometre stretch from Gurjar Ki Thadi to Sodala. Officials told PTI the road is 100 feet wide on record but has narrowed to between 40 and 60 feet in places because of encroachments. TOI said the corridor is marked for widening to about 160 feet.
Traders question timing and markings
Shopkeepers and local residents held demonstrations during the drive, saying action just before the festive season would hurt their business and livelihoods. Some traders had started removing parts of their structures themselves before the JDA teams arrived, PTI reported.
Civil Lines MLA Gopal Sharma visited the site and asked how the JDA had marked properties that had not violated sanctioned plans and had been in use for 40 to 50 years, even though the action was being taken under court orders.
Traffic diverted, more action due
Traffic between Gurjar Ki Thadi and Vivek Vihar Metro station was regulated during the drive, with heavy police deployment. Smaller vehicles were sent through internal lanes, while heavy vehicles were diverted towards Gautam Marg and MJRP College Road.
An enforcement official said large parts of several properties had already been marked as encroachments and would be taken up in later action. Another official said the compliance report would be prepared after Monday’s drive for the next round of court proceedings.
