Death bowling concerns and sloppy fielding are the two gaps India captain Shubman Gill put on record on Sunday, 4 October 2026, a day after West Indies chased down a huge total in the third one-day international at Mullanpur. India had already taken the series, but Gill said the way the bowling and catching finished the rubber was not a good sign before the 2027 World Cup.

India Today reported that India could not defend 352 in Mullanpur, where West Indies completed their highest ODI chase. Al Jazeera’s match report put India at 351 for 7, with KL Rahul 129 not out, and West Indies at 352 for 5, with captain Shai Hope 162 not out, a five-wicket win with 10 balls left. India had won the series with eight-wicket victories in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati. Across the three matches India conceded more than 290 each time, including 405 in Guwahati.

Where the death bowling concerns came from

At the presentation, Gill said many boxes had been ticked but fielding and the death overs needed work. “We dropped around 6-7 catches. That is not a good sign leading up to the World Cup,” he said. On the death, he said the side was not clear whether it was attacking or defending, and that the fields and lengths drifted between a death plan and a middle-overs plan.

He also said injuries and the calendar had kept India from the bowling attack it wanted. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh were away on Asian Games duty. Hardik Pandya and Harshit Rana missed the series through fitness issues, India still have eight ODIs this year: five on the tour of New Zealand, starting in October, and three at home against Sri Lanka in December.
