Himachal kabaddi players to get Rs 1 crore each for Asian Games gold

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday, 5 October 2026, announced a cash award of Rs 1 crore each for the three Himachal kabaddi players who won gold with India’s women’s team at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya: captain Pushpa Rana, Jyoti Thakur and Bhawna Thakur.

The players called on Sukhu in Shimla, where he honoured them with Himachali caps and shawls. He also announced Rs 1 crore for cricketer Renuka Singh Thakur from Rohru, a member of the Indian women’s team that won Asian Games gold by beating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final.

Award raised from Rs 33 lakh

Under the state’s sports policy for team events, the government had first announced Rs 33 lakh for each player, The Tribune reported. The players felt they deserved more and asked the chief minister to raise it to Rs 1 crore, which he agreed to after meeting them.

“We are extremely happy that he has agreed to increase our award,” Pushpa Rana said, adding that the chief minister had told them a function would be held shortly to hand over the money.

A fourth player from Himachal in the squad, Ritu Negi, will not receive the state award because she is married in Haryana and does not represent Himachal, the newspaper said, quoting a government source.

Government jobs for Himachal kabaddi players

Sukhu said the three players would be offered government jobs. Those who do not wish to join the police will be offered posts in the Youth Services and Sports Department so that they can keep playing while helping to develop sport in the state.

The chief minister said the government had made major increases in prize money for international medal winners by revising its sports policy, and was putting special emphasis on sports infrastructure across Himachal.

Unbeaten run to fourth title

Led by Pushpa Rana, India’s women’s kabaddi team went unbeaten in Japan and beat Iran 37-34 in a close final to retain their Asian Games title and win the crown for the fourth time, Sportstar reported.
