Air travel is getting more expensive this festive season after IndiGo raised its fuel surcharge on both domestic and international routes. The IndiGo fuel surcharge hike applies to all new bookings made after 12:01 am on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, The Times of India reported. The increase ranges from ₹100 to ₹350 per sector on domestic flights and goes up to ₹2,500 per sector on international flights.
Why the IndiGo fuel surcharge is rising
The airline blamed the rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, which have reached their highest level in a decade amid the continuing US-Iran war and a weaker rupee.
“The continuously rising ATF costs have required IndiGo to re-calibrate fuel charges across its domestic and international routes,” IndiGo said in a statement. It added that the latest month-on-month rise in fuel prices exceeded 14 per cent, taking ATF costs to “among the highest in the last decade”.
This is IndiGo’s third fuel surcharge increase since the West Asia crisis began, and the report said other airlines are likely to follow.

Road fuel prices unchanged for now
At the pump, state-run oil marketing companies kept petrol and diesel prices unchanged after their daily 6 am revision on 6 October, Mint reported. In New Delhi, petrol costs ₹102.12 a litre and diesel ₹95.20. In Mumbai, petrol is ₹111.21 and diesel ₹97.83, while Kolkata pays ₹113.51 and ₹99.82.
Private retailer Nayara Energy, however, raised petrol prices by ₹5 a litre and diesel by ₹3 on Saturday, 3 October, according to Mint.
Global crude remains elevated. Brent crude futures were at $100.28 a barrel early on Tuesday, slightly lower after a G7 decision to release emergency stocks and higher Middle East exports eased supply worries, Mint reported, citing Reuters.
What it means for travellers
With festive-season travel demand building, passengers booking now will pay the higher surcharge on top of the base fare. If other airlines follow IndiGo, the cost of flying is likely to rise across the market in the coming weeks.
