Lasalgaon onion prices have started to ease after staying high for nearly a month. Good-quality onions at the Lasalgaon Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Nashik, the country’s largest onion market, are now selling wholesale at about ₹46 per kg, down from around ₹55 per kg in early September, Hindustan Times reported on Monday, 5 October 2026. Retail prices, however, remain at around ₹65 per kg.
Why Lasalgaon onion prices are falling
APMC officials said fresh kharif onions from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, where harvesting began in late August, have increased supply. Wholesale prices in Karnataka mandis range from ₹35 to ₹51 per kg, depending on quality. Imports from Egypt have also weighed on rates at Lasalgaon.
Inferior-quality onions have dropped from about ₹45 per kg to ₹35 per kg over the same period. Daily arrivals at Lasalgaon are running at around 6,000 quintals, traders said.
The Free Press Journal, reporting the same day, put the price of good-quality onions at ₹49 per kg. It said Lasalgaon rates ranged from ₹1,000 to ₹4,900 per quintal, with an average of ₹4,200 per quintal.
No steep fall expected
Pravin Kadam, director of Lasalgaon APMC, ruled out a big further drop. “Demand for Nashik onions in the hotel industry is higher than for onions from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. I do not foresee further easing of wholesale prices at Lasalgaon,” he said.
Exporters say overseas buyers currently prefer the newly harvested crop from the two southern states. “Since the onions from these two states are new, overseas buyers are keen to purchase them,” said Nashik-based exporter Vikas Singh.
Traders added that farmers who held back stock hoping for higher prices may now release it if they fear a further decline, which could add more pressure on wholesale rates.
Why shoppers are still paying more
Kadam said wastage explains much of the gap between wholesale and retail prices. “The retail price is on the higher side since nearly 20-30% of the onions that traders buy for retail sale are damaged. Unless they sell the produce at a proper price, they will incur losses,” he said.
That means households may not see the wholesale drop reflected quickly in their local markets, even as more supply reaches the mandis.
