The Digger box office debut has handed Tom Cruise one of the weakest starts of his career. Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s satire opened to $8 million in North America over the 2 to 4 October weekend, finishing fifth, while Amazon MGM Studios’ Verity took the top spot with $32.6 million, according to figures reported by Deadline and ABC News on 4 and 5 October 2026.
Digger box office: Cruise’s lowest opening since 2007
Deadline said Digger’s start was Cruise’s lowest since Lions for Lambs opened to $6.7 million in 2007. ABC News reported that the film made $20 million worldwide, including $12 million from international markets.
The cost makes the result harder for Warner Bros. ABC News put the reported production budget at $125 million before marketing, while Deadline described it as a $160 million-plus film. In the satire, Cruise plays a powerful oil tycoon whose reckless drilling triggers an environmental disaster. Audiences gave it a C+ CinemaScore.
The opening comes as Paramount Skydance closes its acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery, ABC News reported.
Verity takes No. 1
Verity, adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel and directed by Michael Showalter, stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. Its $32.6 million start is the second-best opening for a Hoover adaptation, behind It Ends With Us, according to Deadline. The thriller also led worldwide with $62.5 million.
Like Digger, Verity drew a C+ CinemaScore, the lowest yet for a Hoover film. Deadline pointed out that Fifty Shades of Grey also drew a C+ and still went on to do well.
The rest of the top ten
Sony’s Resident Evil came second with $12.5 million in its third weekend. Paramount’s Heart of the Beast was third with $11 million, and A24’s Primetime took $8 million in fourth.
Indian cinema also featured on the chart. Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam – The Conclusion placed eighth with $2.7 million from 541 theatres in its opening weekend. Spider-Man: Brand New Day rounded out the top ten with $2.45 million in its tenth week.
Deadline said overall weekend business was close to $100 million, about 15 per cent higher than the same weekend last year.
