OpenAI announced on Monday, 5 October 2026, that it is adding ChatGPT visual ads, a new display format that will appear alongside images users ask the chatbot to generate, TechCrunch reported. The ads will begin appearing later this month in the United States only, featuring products and services from an initial test group of advertisers.
Labelled and kept separate
OpenAI said the new ads will be clearly labelled and will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. In its own announcement, the company said the ads will stay separate from the generated image. The format is aimed at advertisers who want to use more visual imagery to tell their stories.
OpenAI introduced ads earlier this year to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers and expanded them to India in August. Once ChatGPT visual ads roll out globally, advertisers will be able to reach ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users, according to TechCrunch.
More measurement tools
Alongside the display ads, OpenAI is widening its measurement tools and partners. Click-attribution partners now include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin, with Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL handling advanced, full-funnel measurement. OpenAI has also partnered with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic so advertisers can run “geo-based” experiments.
The company said it is developing brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to help advertisers understand the ChatGPT ads environment.
Competition from Meta’s Muse
The move follows the launch of Meta’s Muse, an agentic AI app that is free to everyone and a growing competitor to chatbots such as ChatGPT. TechCrunch said the new ads could prove disruptive to the user experience, but could also push more casual users to pay for a subscription to avoid them.
Taken together, the steps show OpenAI working to make ChatGPT a viable ad-supported business for people on its free and low-cost plans. OpenAI said the features are consistent with its ads principles: ChatGPT’s answers stay independent, conversations stay private and users remain in control.
