Sensex and Nifty snap four-day losing streak as oil prices ease

India’s benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ended higher on Monday, 5 October 2026, snapping a four-session losing streak in Mumbai as easing crude oil prices and positive global cues brought buyers back to equities, The Economic Times reported. The BSE Sensex gained 472.77 points, or 0.66%, to close at 72,382.47, while the NSE Nifty 50 rose 133.80 points, or 0.60%, to 22,555.75.

A volatile session

Monday’s trade was choppy. The Sensex opened at 72,340.95, rose as much as 722.23 points, or 1%, to 72,631.93, and then slid to a low of 71,840.18 before recovering, according to Mint. The Economic Times said both indices briefly slipped into the red in the middle of the session before buyers stepped in.

Global signals helped. The US 10-year Treasury yield eased towards 5.21% and Brent crude moderated to around $101-102 a barrel, giving some relief to a market that imports most of its oil. Foreign portfolio investors continued to sell, while domestic institutional investors were strong buyers. FMCG stocks drew renewed interest, while healthcare shares came under pressure.

What analysts are watching for the Sensex and Nifty

Rupak De, senior technical analyst at LKP Securities, told Mint that the Nifty met resistance around 22,600 and stayed in a 200-point range. He said support is placed at 22,400, and a decisive fall below it could revive the bearish move, while a sustained move above 22,600 might provide short-term respite.

Early signals for Tuesday, 6 October, were positive. GIFT Nifty was trading at 22,630 around 8 am, up 54 points, Moneycontrol reported, helped by gains in Asian markets, a record close for the Nasdaq and softer crude prices. Elevated bond yields, persistent foreign selling and geopolitical risks could keep any recovery measured, it added.

RBI decision next

The bigger event for markets this week is the Reserve Bank of India’s policy decision on Wednesday, 7 October. The Times of India’s market blog said a 25-basis-point rate hike is widely expected. Investors will look for signals on how far the central bank is prepared to tighten as it deals with higher oil prices, a weak rupee and rising inflation.
