Flipkart adds warehouse space ahead of festival orders

Flipkart has expanded its fulfilment network for the festival rush, The Hindu BusinessLine reported on 5 October 2026.

The company’s logistics arm, Ekart, has added 14 million cubic feet of warehousing, which the report describes as 50 percent more space. It has extended delivery to more than 750 new PIN codes and added over 900 delivery hubs, taking the total to 8,200. Hemant Badri, senior vice-president and head of supply chain at Flipkart Group, said densifying the network had helped reduce the impact of rising fuel and packaging costs. “For large appliances, we have doubled the number of fulfilment centres to 40 and cut the average distance travelled from about 290 km to 150 km,” he said.

Flipkart’s Coimbatore centre and how stock moves

The report looks at a 1.2 lakh square foot centre at Ottakkalmandapam, near Coimbatore, focused on mobiles, electronics and general merchandise. Stock unloaded at docks moves by conveyor into an inbound zone. A worker sticks a warehouse ID barcode on each item after checking that attributes match the listing. That barcode is how the item is tracked to the doorstep. Once a “putter” scans a product onto a shelf, it becomes available to buy in the app. Pickers take sold items into blue tote boxes. The facility manager said staff do not decide locations themselves: low-demand goods go to upper floors and high-demand goods to the centre of the aisle, through a central system. The system also measures size, weight and volume, decides what fits in one tote, and tells packers which box to use, which products to club and how much packing material to add. After packing, scanners direct sorting by city, secondary centre and final hub before bags return to the docks.

BusinessLine said the writer, Rohan Das, was in Coimbatore at Flipkart’s invitation. The page was updated at 06:25 am on 5 October.
