Brazil beat India 4-0 on Selecao’s first Kolkata visit

Five-time World Cup winners Brazil beat India 4-0 in a friendly in Kolkata on Saturday, AFP reported in Dawn on 5 October 2026.

It was the senior men’s teams’ first meeting, and India’s first time hosting a senior men’s Brazil side. Dawn said the match drew buzz, but a half-empty Salt Lake Stadium, capacity 65,000, greeted the players. Critics blamed ticket prices. The cheapest tickets were 999 rupees, about $10, and sold within minutes of going on sale. Further categories ranged from 3,500 to 25,000 rupees. Brazil’s squad included Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior and Marquinhos. India were ranked 138th. The women’s teams had met in Manaus in 2021.

Brazil goals and the coaches’ comments

Vinicius was denied by goalkeeper and captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in the eighth minute. Chelsea forward Estevao put Brazil ahead in the 28th minute with a left-foot shot. Pedro made it 2-0 in the 42nd. In the 55th minute Manvir Singh’s strike drew a save. Samuel Lino, on for Vinicius, scored in the 58th minute and added a second just before the whistle for 4-0.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said of his younger players: “These [young] players played extremely well. They have improved on a day-to-day basis, starting from Australia to coming here.” He said they had shown their qualities “even in difficult moments”. Brazil arrived after a win and a draw in friendlies in Australia, and are rebuilding after a World Cup exit to Norway in July.

India coach Khalid Jamil said: “Two or three goals were very soft due to individual errors. Our concentration was lacking at times.” He added that the players had belief and should continue, and that “there was pressure, no doubt, on playing a champion side and we could not hide that”. India have never qualified for a World Cup. The report says football, while popular, plays second fiddle to cricket in the country.
