Yemen fighting cuts off food aid to 800,000 people as WFP warns of catastrophe in Taiz

Intensifying Yemen fighting has cut off life-saving food aid to around 800,000 people, the World Food Programme (WFP) said on 14 October 2026. Shifting frontlines, blocked roads and insecurity are keeping aid teams out of the city of Taiz and other conflict zones.

Taiz cut off from the World Food Programme

WFP and its partners cannot reach more than 600,000 people in Taiz who depend on aid, including more than 200,000 women and children. Taiz is Yemen’s third-largest city, and 10 of its governorate’s 16 districts are already at emergency levels of hunger. Wheat flour stocks are nearly gone and markets are running out of food. Al Jazeera reported that aid groups warned of a humanitarian catastrophe.

Key Facts

  • Cut off from aid: about 800,000 people
  • Unreachable in Taiz: over 600,000
  • Acutely food insecure: 18 million+
  • Malnourished children: 2.2 million
  • WFP need: US$268 million through 2027

“This is the kind of situation that can rapidly spiral into a humanitarian catastrophe if assistance cannot move safely and reach those who need it most.”

— El-Khidir Daloum, WFP country director in Yemen

Yemen fighting deepens food insecurity

Across Yemen, more than 18 million people face acute food insecurity, and 2.2 million children under five are acutely malnourished, UN News said. In areas WFP can still reach, nearly 75 per cent of households could not meet basic food needs. The agency’s offices have been breached and supply routes cut, while 37 of its staff are among 72 UN personnel held by the Houthi authorities.

El-Khidir Daloum's warning and the funding gap

WFP country director El-Khidir Daloum said the agency is critically concerned about the growing number of people it can no longer reach, noting that many families have been displaced several times and could barely afford basic food. Teams have already helped more than 115,000 newly displaced people and are preparing to reach 1.5 million when access returns. WFP says it needs US$268 million to keep operations running through 2027.

Why It Matters: Yemen remains one of the world's worst hunger crises, and losing access to a major city can push families towards famine within months.
