Artemis III update: NASA to brief on its Moon timeline and next year’s test flight on 23 October

NASA will give an Artemis III and wider Artemis program update on 23 October 2026 at 2 pm EDT (11:30 pm IST), the agency said on 14 October. Officials will explain how plans to return American astronauts to the Moon’s surface by 2028 are progressing.

What Artemis III is now planned to do

NASA said Artemis III will send four astronauts to low Earth orbit next year to test critical systems needed for later lunar landings, rather than landing on the Moon itself. The Space Tap reported that the twin solid rocket boosters for Artemis III are already stacked in the Vehicle Assembly Building. Artemis II flew four astronauts around the Moon in April 2026, and its crew took the Earthset photo above on 6 April as they were about to pass behind the Moon.

Key Facts

  • Briefing: 23 October, 2 pm EDT (11:30 pm IST)
  • Artemis III: 4 astronauts, low Earth orbit test, next year
  • Landing goal: 2028
  • Media deadline: 16 October
  • Speakers: Amit Kshatriya, Jeremy Parsons

Amit Kshatriya and Jeremy Parsons to speak

Speakers include NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya and Artemis program manager Jeremy Parsons, NASA said. SpacePolicyOnline also lists Administrator Jared Isaacman for the event. US media wanting to attend in person had to apply by noon on 16 October, and the update will be streamed online. NASA’s release says the event will be held at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and remote questions go through the Kennedy newsroom.

Moon landing 2028 and the faster Artemis program

NASA has described the briefing as an update on Artemis acceleration, and plans to send crews on harder missions near the lunar South Pole over time. Its long-term aim is an enduring human presence on the Moon and groundwork for a first crewed mission to Mars, alongside economic and scientific benefits from lunar missions. NASA has not yet named the Artemis III crew, and details on timing are expected at the briefing.

Why It Matters: The briefing should show whether NASA's faster Moon timetable is realistic, which matters for every partner in the Artemis programme.
