UN chief condemns the Riyadh airport attack

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the Houthi missile attack in a statement late on Saturday, saying attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international law. Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said 309 people were wounded in Saturday’s strike. The dead include at least four Saudis, two Bangladeshis and a US citizen, UN News said.

Key Facts

  • Saturday strike toll: 13, including an Indian national (CNA)
  • Wounded on Saturday: 309
  • Sunday: Terminal 4 hit, 11 wounded, fire
  • Third attack on the airport this week

“These attacks must cease immediately.”

Third attack this week

It was the third Houthi attack on the airport this week, according to UN News. Thursday’s strikes killed three Saudis, including a Saudia pilot. Saudi authorities blamed the Iran-backed Houthis, who claimed responsibility, CNA said. Houthi media said the airport in Sana’a was hit by an airstrike on Sunday and blamed Saudi Arabia.

A war that has spread to the Red Sea

A 2022 ceasefire in Yemen largely held until this summer, UN News said. In September the Houthis captured the port of Mokha and islands in the Bab al-Mandab strait. Government forces backed by Saudi-led air strikes launched a counteroffensive this month, and the Houthis have answered with missiles and drones.

Why It Matters: Repeated strikes on one of the Gulf's busiest airports threaten travel for millions, including large numbers of Indian workers in Saudi Arabia.
