Sudan famine risk grows in Darfur and Kordofan as drought deepens war crisis

Sudan famine risk is growing in Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan as a severe El Niño drought adds to the war, the UN-backed IPC hunger monitor warned on Monday. Aid is falling short because of funding gaps, insecurity and blocked access, UN News reported.

Why the Sudan famine risk is rising

In Eastern Jebel Marra, South Darfur, a survey of two displacement camps found acute malnutrition among children at 38 and 30.8 per cent, above the famine threshold. Across Greater Darfur, 13 of 17 nutrition surveys since January found critical levels. WHO also published the alert.

Key Facts

  • Jebel Marra camps: 38% and 30.8% child acute malnutrition
  • Darfur surveys at critical level: 13 of 17
  • Sudan under drought: over half the country
  • Children treated for complicated SAM: 26%

“Famine is the collapse of systems. We are witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe, already of historic proportions.”

El Nino drought on top of war

Drought now covers more than half of Sudan. In North Darfur, 64 per cent of cropland shows poor plant growth, and late rains in September came too late for most cereals. In Greater Kordofan, more than 300,000 people have fled their homes since October 2025.

Aid blocked and children untreated

Two WFP-contracted trucks came under fire on 2 and 3 October, killing at least one person. As of August, only 26 per cent of children expected to need care for severe acute malnutrition with complications had received it. Less than half of Sudan’s aid appeal was funded as of 8 October.

Why It Matters: Without treatment, as many as two thirds of the sickest malnourished children could die, so access and funding decide how many survive.
