CRS-35 launch: SpaceX Dragon carries final ISS solar arrays and 6,300 pounds of cargo

NASA’s CRS-35 resupply mission lifted off on a SpaceX Falcon 9 at 6:33 am EDT on 13 October (4:03 pm IST) from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The Dragon cargo ship is carrying more than 6,300 pounds of supplies and the last pair of International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Arrays.

CRS-35 docking timeline for SpaceX Dragon

NASA said Dragon is due to dock on its own at 11 am EDT on Thursday, 15 October (8:30 pm IST), at the space-facing port of the station’s Harmony module. NASA will stream rendezvous and docking coverage from 9:15 am EDT. Dragon will stay at the station until mid-November and then return with time-critical research, splashing down off California. Spaceflight Now and Space.com also reported the successful launch.

Key Facts

  • Launch: 13 Oct, 6:33 am EDT (4:03 pm IST)
  • Cargo: 6,300+ pounds
  • Docking: 15 Oct, 11 am EDT (8:30 pm IST)
  • Return: mid-November, off California

Roll-out solar arrays finish the power upgrade

The final pair of roll-out solar arrays will complete the station’s power upgrade, NASA said. The extra electricity will support research and operations, and also the station’s safe, controlled deorbit at the end of its life. Astronauts will install the arrays during a series of spacewalks planned for later this fall. The arrays travel in Dragon’s unpressurised trunk, Spaceflight Now reported. The new arrays are rolled out over the station’s older panels to boost the power they produce.

Artificial retinas, heart tissue and brain organoids

Dragon is delivering hardware to manufacture artificial retinas in microgravity, which NASA said could help restore vision for patients on Earth. It also carries 3D heart tissue models for large-scale drug testing, materials to study how a new type of glass forms without gravity, and brain organoids that could reveal treatment targets for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis. NASA said these are only a sample of the hundreds of studies run on the station. Research on the station is also meant to lay the groundwork for NASA’s deep space missions under the Artemis programme.

Why It Matters: These solar arrays are the last piece of the station's power upgrade, which it needs for research now and for a safe deorbit later.
