Hurricane Simon weakens to 75 mph off Mexico as Baja California Sur told to stay alert

Hurricane Simon weakened to maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h) on Wednesday, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said, but people in Mexico’s Baja California Sur were told to keep watching the storm. At 2 pm MST (2:30 am IST Thursday) it was about 270 miles south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas.

Hurricane Hunter aircraft found Simon had weakened further, the NHC said. The storm was drifting south-west at just 3 mph, with a central pressure of 989 mb, and was expected to move slowly and erratically before turning north on Friday. There were no coastal watches or warnings, but they may be needed for parts of Baja California Sur over the next day or two.

Key Facts

  • Max winds: 75 mph (120 km/h)
  • Position: about 270 miles SSE of Cabo San Lucas
  • Movement: south-west at 3 mph
  • Peak: Category 4, 250 km/h on 11 October
  • Rain for Baja California Sur: 1-2 inches, up to 3

Hurricane Simon brushed Manzanillo as a Category 4

Simon is a very small hurricane, with hurricane-force winds reaching only about 20 km from its centre. On 11 October it passed close to the coast as a Category 4 storm, with sustained winds of 250 km/h, NASA’s Earth Observatory said. Its eye was about 50 km offshore between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta, and it brought heavy rain and flooding to coastal areas. The NHC noted that the Sierra Madre mountains seemed to temper the storm somewhat.

Baja California Sur rain and surf risk

The NHC expects 1 to 2 inches of rain, with up to 3 inches in places, over parts of Baja California Sur through early Saturday. Swells will hit west-central Mexico and Baja California Sur for several days and are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents. Satellites also spotted ripples called gravity waves spreading from the storm high into the atmosphere.

Why It Matters: Slow, erratic storms are hard to forecast, and a late turn north could still bring rain and dangerous surf to Baja California Sur.
