Manipur violence: nine killed, 14 houses torched across hill districts

Fresh Manipur violence killed at least nine people across the state’s hill districts within 24 hours from Friday night, the Indian Express reported. About 14 houses belonging to Naga and Kuki families were set ablaze.

How the Manipur violence unfolded

The trouble began with an exchange of fire near the Chassad police station in Kamjong district, the Hindustan Times reported. Arson followed later that night. Gunfire broke out again on Saturday between about 5 am and 7 am, according to the Indian Express.

Chief Minister meets Prime Minister

Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi as the violence spread. He briefed the PM on resumed bus services and goods traffic on NH-37 and NH-2. Modi assured all possible assistance to restore peace, the Indian Express reported.

The CM also sought an upgrade of RIMS Imphal to AIIMS status, the Indian Express reported. Security forces remain deployed in the affected districts, and restrictions near Chassad stay in force until further orders.
