Mekong Delta saltwater farming: Vietnam’s rice bowl learns to live with the sea

Mekong Delta saltwater farming is becoming a survival strategy as rising seas push salt farther inland in Vietnam’s rice bowl, UN News reported. Researchers at the UN University’s Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) are studying how farmers adapt.

Why Mekong Delta saltwater farming is spreading

The delta’s fields helped make Vietnam one of the world’s leading rice exporters. But rising seas, less reliable droughts and floods, and upstream dams that trap sediment are rewriting that balance, UN News said. The UNU-EHS researchers work in provinces such as Ca Mau.

Key Facts

  • Vietnam: one of the world’s top rice exporters
  • Threats: sea-level rise, dams, El Niño

  • Study areas include Ca Mau province

“The timing, the strength of floods, how hot it's going to be and when have become harder for farmers to predict.”

— Dr Jack O'Connor, UNU-EHS

El Niño adds pressure

Vietnamese authorities warned this summer that El Niño could bring prolonged heat, less rain and worse saltwater intrusion, potentially threatening hundreds of thousands of acres of rice, according to UN News. Marine ecologist Jack O’Connor said farmers find it harder to predict floods and heat, which decide when they plant.

A delta starved of sediment

The Mekong begins on the Tibetan Plateau and runs through China and Southeast Asia to southern Vietnam. Dams upstream have trapped much of the sediment that once rebuilt the delta’s soils and coastline. UNU-EHS said the delta shows what many coastal regions may face when resisting change is no longer enough.

Why It Matters: The Mekong's struggle mirrors risks for India's own deltas, from the Sundarbans to the Godavari, as seas rise.
