Poppy straw seizure: CBN recovers over 4.2 tonnes in two raids near Rajasthan-MP border

A major poppy straw seizure by the Central Bureau of Narcotics has netted 4,209.80 kg of the contraband in two operations, the Finance Ministry said on Sunday. Three people were arrested under the NDPS Act, 1985, and two trucks were seized.

Where the poppy straw seizure took place

On 5 October, CBN Neemuch officers stopped a Haryana-registered container truck on the Udaipur-Chittorgarh highway and found 929.08 kg hidden under 39 plastic sacks, the ministry said. One person was arrested.

Hidden under wheat bags

On 9 October, officers intercepted a Rajasthan-registered Tata truck on the Gandhisagar-Bhanpura road in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh. A search at the CBN office in Garoth found 3,280.72 kg of poppy straw under 100 bags of wheat used as cover cargo. Both occupants were arrested.

Probe into the network

The ministry said investigators are now trying to trace the source of the contraband, the intended buyers and others in the trafficking chain. Nyaya Portal and other outlets carried the official details. The Neemuch-Mandsaur-Chittorgarh belt is India’s main licensed opium-growing area.

Why It Matters: The seizures point to organised smuggling routes running through the Rajasthan-Madhya Pradesh opium belt.
