Djibouti shipwreck: death toll rises to 139 with 84 still missing, says IOM

The Djibouti shipwreck death toll has risen to at least 139, with 84 people still missing, the UN migration agency IOM said on Sunday. The boat was carrying 305 people from Djibouti towards Yemen when it capsized near Guehere, north of Obock, on the night of 8-9 October.

How the Djibouti shipwreck toll grew

The toll rose from 109 after 30 more bodies were recovered, IOM said. AFP reported that the dead include 15 children, and that most people on board were Ethiopian. About 82 people survived, and search and recovery operations are continuing.

One of the deadliest on the Eastern Route

IOM called it one of the deadliest shipwrecks recorded on the Eastern Route from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula. IOM’s Djibouti chief of mission Alexandre Coissac told AP the official count includes only bodies buried by authorities, so the real toll may be higher.

Help for survivors

IOM is giving survivors healthcare, psychosocial support, food, shelter and protection at its Migrant Response Centre in Obock. The UN Resident Coordinator in Djibouti, Jose Barahona, said he was deeply saddened by the loss of life, UN News reported.

Why It Matters: The disaster highlights the risks on a little-watched migration route that crosses into war-hit Yemen.
