Editor's note: This is a major new development in the Delhi protest and detentions story TrendDesh reported on 11 October.

The INDIA bloc Supreme Court march is set for Monday afternoon even after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined to meet opposition leaders, India Today and WION reported. Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge had sought time with the CJI between 4 pm and 5 pm to hand over a memorandum.

Why the INDIA bloc Supreme Court march is going ahead

According to WION, citing LiveLaw, the CJI said a meeting would be inappropriate because the issues are already sub judice. Sources told India Today that he asked the leaders to file a petition on the judicial side, which could be heard on Tuesday. The CJI also said the Supreme Court is open to all citizens if their fundamental rights are violated, India Today reported.

Key Facts

  • Gathering point: CP-Barakhamba Road junction, 1.30 pm
  • CJI asked leaders to file a petition, possible hearing Tuesday
  • Demands: CEC’s resignation, halt to SIR, paper ballots
  • UN rights office urged release of those arbitrarily detained

“Restrictions on peaceful protests must meet strict tests of necessity and proportionality.”

What the opposition is demanding

The ‘Chalo Delhi – March for Democracy’ protest seeks Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, a halt to the special intensive revision of electoral rolls and a return to paper ballots. Participants were asked to gather at the Connaught Place-Barakhamba Road junction at 1.30 pm. Kharge said about 32,000 police and 7,500 CRPF personnel were deployed on Saturday.

UN rights office joins the criticism

The UN human rights office said anyone arbitrarily detained during the Delhi protests must be released immediately and unconditionally. Spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said restrictions on peaceful protest must meet strict tests of necessity and proportionality. The BJP has accused Gandhi of dragging the President into a political row.

Why It Matters: The march takes the electoral-roll dispute to the doors of the top court, testing how far protest rights will be allowed in the capital.
