Ethiopia Tigray fighting: Guterres ‘gravely concerned’ as reports of Eritrean troops grow

The Ethiopia Tigray fighting has drawn a sharp warning from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who called for an immediate end to renewed clashes in northern Ethiopia, UN News reported. He said he was deeply worried by reports that Eritrean forces are present in the country.

What Guterres said about the Ethiopia Tigray fighting

In a statement issued on Friday night through his spokesperson, Guterres urged all parties to cease hostilities and asked the signatories of the Pretoria Agreement to return to dialogue. He said fighting in the Tigray, Afar and Amhara regions risks destabilising the wider region.

Key Facts

  • Regions affected: Tigray, Afar, Amhara
  • UN urges return to the Pretoria Agreement
  • Ethiopia has written to the UN alleging an Eritrean incursion (AP)
  • Kobo return programme suspended

Ethiopia accuses Eritrea

AP reported that Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of a troop incursion in a self-defence letter to the UN. The BBC quoted residents as saying Eritrean troops had moved deep into Ethiopia. Eritrea has denied the claims, according to reports. Guterres reminded states of their UN Charter duty to refrain from the use of force against other states.

Aid under pressure

UN relief chief Tom Fletcher has called for safe and rapid access for aid workers. UN teams are still trying to deliver food and healthcare, but fighting is displacing people across central, northwestern and eastern Tigray; verified figures are not yet available. A return effort for displaced people from Kobo in Amhara has been suspended.

Why It Matters: A wider Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict would threaten the fragile peace in Tigray and the stability of the Horn of Africa.
