Exercise INDRA 2026: INS Sahyadri reaches Vladivostok for India-Russia naval drills

Exercise INDRA 2026 moved a step closer as Indian Naval Ship Sahyadri arrived at Vladivostok, Russia, on 10 October, the Ministry of Defence said. The bilateral drill between the Indian Navy and the Russian Federation Navy runs from 13 to 18 October, The Tribune reported.

What Exercise INDRA 2026 will involve

The exercise will begin with a harbour phase of professional interactions and then move to coordinated operations at sea, the ministry said. The aim is to improve mutual understanding, operational coordination and interoperability between the two navies. Social and cultural events are also planned for the crews.

Policy behind the deployment

The ministry linked the deployment to India’s MAHASAGAR vision, which stands for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. It said the visit builds on the momentum of the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit held on 4-5 December 2025.

A busy week for Indian warships abroad

The INDRA drill comes as INS Trishul takes part in Exercise KONKAN with the Royal Navy off Plymouth in the UK. The Tribune and IANS also reported Sahyadri’s arrival, citing the Navy. INS Sahyadri is a guided-missile stealth frigate.

Why It Matters: Regular drills with Russia keep a long defence partnership active while India also deepens naval ties with Western partners.
