DRI gold seizure: 5.8 kg of smuggled gold found in secret car cavity near Visakhapatnam

A DRI gold seizure near Visakhapatnam has uncovered 5,832.90 grams of 24-carat foreign-origin gold worth about Rs 8.98 crore, the Finance Ministry said. The gold was hidden in a specially built cavity in a car travelling from Kolkata to Hyderabad.

How the DRI gold seizure unfolded

Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence intercepted the car during 8-9 October after a long chase on the national highway, the ministry said. The Hindu reported that the gold was found in three packets in a cavity under the leg space of the front passenger seat.

Smuggled across the eastern border

The two occupants admitted the gold had been smuggled in through the India-Bangladesh border, according to the ministry and ThePrint. Both were arrested under the Customs Act, 1962, and remanded to judicial custody, The Hindu said.

Second such case in weeks

The ministry said the case closely resembles a seizure on 18-19 September, when DRI recovered more than 15 kg of gold worth over Rs 23 crore from cavities in two Thar vehicles near Palwal toll plaza. It said gangs are using increasingly sophisticated vehicle modifications.

Why It Matters: High gold prices are drawing organised smuggling networks that modify vehicles to move bullion across states.
