Cote d’Ivoire dam eases herder-farmer clashes in Torla village

A rehabilitated Cote d’Ivoire dam in the village of Torla is helping cut dry-season clashes between cattle herders and farmers, UN News reported. The agropastoral dam, completed in August, now holds more water and releases it more reliably for livestock and irrigation.

How the Cote d’Ivoire dam changed village life

For years, as grazing land and water points dried up, herders pushed cattle through cultivated fields, leading to disputes, UN News said. Herders’ leader Adam Ouattara, who has headed the local association since 2021, said there are now fewer conflicts and people sit together to talk.

Key Facts

  • Location: Torla village, northern Cote d’Ivoire
  • Dam rehabilitation completed: August 2026
  • Support: IOM and UN Peacebuilding Fund
  • Benefits: livestock water and irrigation

“Today, we sit together and discuss. There are fewer conflicts.”

More water, more school fees

His wife Makongo Traoré grows aubergines, okra and tomatoes nearby. She said a steady water supply has let her expand her plot, and the income now supports her children’s schooling. The couple have four children.

Backed by the UN

The dam is managed by the community with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Peacebuilding Fund and partners, according to IOM and UN News. The aim is to prevent conflicts over natural resources in northern Cote d’Ivoire, where seasonal herding and expanding farms compete for land.

Why It Matters: Shared water infrastructure offers a low-cost model for easing herder-farmer conflicts seen across West Africa's Sahel belt.
