Sudan Blue Nile drone strike kills at least 40, mostly women and girls

A Sudan Blue Nile drone strike has killed at least 40 people near the Ethiopian border, most of them women and girls, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said, citing initial reports. The BBC, quoting a rights group, later put the toll at 41 and said the strike hit displaced people.

Who is blamed for the Sudan Blue Nile drone strike

The BBC reported that a rights group blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF-led alliance has denied responsibility, according to other reports. Dujarric condemned the ‘horrifying reports’ and said attacks on civilians are prohibited under international humanitarian law.

Key Facts

  • Killed: at least 40 (UN), 41 (BBC)
  • Most victims were women and girls
  • Location: Blue Nile State, near the Ethiopian border
  • War began in April 2023

A front line on the border

Fighting in Blue Nile State has escalated in recent months as the RSF and the Sudanese government battle over towns and bases near the Ethiopian border, UN News said. Thousands of civilians have been displaced in the area by sustained attacks in recent weeks.

A war in its fourth year

The conflict between the army and the RSF has been under way since April 2023. Dujarric called for those responsible for violations to be held accountable. Aid agencies have repeatedly warned that civilians in Sudan face one of the world’s largest displacement crises.

Why It Matters: The strike shows the Sudan war spreading to new border fronts, where displaced families have few places left to flee.
