Ukraine energy ceasefire: Zelensky says Russia hit six energy sites after Trump’s truce

Editor's note: This is a major new development in the Russia-Ukraine peace story TrendDesh reported on 11 October.

The Ukraine energy ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump has already been broken, Volodymyr Zelensky said, accusing Russia of hitting six Ukrainian energy sites hours after the truce, the BBC reported. Zelensky said 33 people were injured in the strikes.

What happened after the Ukraine energy ceasefire

Trump said on Sunday the truce was ‘effective immediately’. Ukraine’s grid operator Ukrenergo reported new power cuts in Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia on Monday, and a strike left Izyum without power, the BBC said. Naftogaz said Russia hit its gas production sites in the Kharkiv region, causing a fire, Al Jazeera reported.

Key Facts

  • Energy sites hit: 6, says Zelensky
  • Injured: 33
  • Power cuts: Kharkiv, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia
  • New EU sanctions: almost 1,600

“We haven't yet seen that also Russia will stick to it.”

— Kaja Kallas, EU foreign policy chief

Zelensky asks the US to step in

Speaking by video to the Warsaw Security Forum, Zelensky urged Washington to make sure Moscow respects the truce, and said Kyiv would respond if attacks continue, Al Jazeera said. He had earlier backed the idea as a major step toward ending the war.

Kaja Kallas and Europe's response

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc would welcome an energy ceasefire when it holds. The EU also added almost 1,600 new sanctions on Russia’s military-industrial complex. Estonia’s foreign minister said the ceasefire was not working.

Why It Matters: With winter close, attacks on power and gas sites decide whether millions of Ukrainians have heat, and whether wider peace talks can move forward.
