Sophie Adenot back in Europe after record 237-day ISS mission

Sophie Adenot, the ESA astronaut, is back in Europe after 237 days aboard the International Space Station, landing in Cologne, Germany, on 10 October, ESA said. Her epsilon mission set a new European record for the longest single spaceflight.

Sophie Adenot's journey home

Adenot undocked with NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway and cosmonaut Andrei Fedyaev on 7 October. Crew-12 splashed down on 8 October after a 27-hour return. She then flew from Houston to ESA’s European Astronaut Centre in Cologne on a French Air and Space Force plane.

Longest European spaceflight and three spacewalks

Her mission lasted 237 days, 5 hours and 18 minutes, beating Luca Parmitano’s record by more than 35 days. Crew-12 is also the longest SpaceX Dragon mission so far. Adenot became the first French woman to do a spacewalk, completing three in 14 days for a total of 19 hours and 42 minutes.

What comes next

She will spend two to three weeks adjusting to gravity at :envihab, a German Aerospace Center facility next to the astronaut centre, before more rehabilitation. ESA chief Josef Aschbacher said Europe must secure a role in exploration matching its weight.

Why It Matters: Adenot's record mission gives Europe momentum ahead of December's ESA ministerial meeting, where its future role in human spaceflight will be decided.
