CM Bhajanlal flags ₹41,000-crore water push; Dhanawati reservoir tender moves

Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Friday again cast water as Rajasthan’s defining development constraint, highlighting a portfolio of projects worth about ₹41,000 crore and pointing to progress on Yamuna water allocation works and the Dhanawati reservoir for Shekhawati. Officials said tenders linked to the ₹1,622.31-crore Dhanawati component are moving, with the political pitch that reliable irrigation can let farmers “grow gold” in districts long defined by scarcity.

From agreement to canal steel

The Yamuna understanding with upstream partners matters only when pipes, lift schemes and command-area channels actually deliver. Sharma’s message bundled ongoing works, new sanctions and the Dhanawati storage idea as ane narrative: stop depending on a weak monsoon — a live concern after India’s weakest rains since 2015, covered in our monsoon report. Shekhawati MLAs have lobbied for years for a dedicated storage-and-distribution spine; Dhanawati is the current engineering answer on the table.

Farm unions will watch land acquisition, power for lift irrigation and whether water reaches tail-end villages or stops at politically visible headworks. The ₹41,000-crore figure aggregates multiple schemes; auditors will eventually ask how much is fresh capital versus restated ongoing outlays.

Political timing

The water push follows this week’s Shekhawati project launches — see our ₹1,277-crore package. Coverage of the broader water remarks is in The News Mill.

Irrigation engineers caution that lift schemes without assured power allocation become seasonal ornaments; the CM’s pitch therefore pairs water storage with feeder electricity planning.

Correspondents following the rajasthan desk will continue to update figures and official statements as they firm through the holiday weekend.

Field test

Tender awards and first concrete pours — not podium speeches — will decide if Shekhawati’s water story changes before the next sowing cycle.
