Modi speaks to Trump on trade, defence and energy amid Russia sanctions concerns

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday to assess cooperation in trade, defence, energy and critical technologies, against the backdrop of New Delhi’s concerns over a new US sanctions law targeting major purchasers of Russian oil. Modi described the conversation as productive and said both sides agreed to maintain close engagement on their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership — language that was notably cooler than the “good friend” framing of earlier years.

Sanctions law shadows bilateral trade talks

India has warned that the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act — which empowers Washington to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the top five buyers of Russian oil — could affect bilateral ties and global energy markets. The call came as Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal visits the United States from 29 September to 5 October for trade-deal talks and a G20 trade ministers’ meeting, ahead of Modi’s planned December G20 visit to the US. Officials still describe the goal as a “balanced and mutually beneficial” agreement even after months of tariff friction.

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has also spoken more bluntly in recent days about US policy on terrorism, Pakistan and “self-centred” trade measures, reflecting domestic pressure on New Delhi to push back. Opposition parties have accused the government of yielding too often to Washington; the sharper public tone is meant to show that India will defend its energy security and strategic autonomy.

What New Delhi wants from the next round

Diplomats say India wants clarity that energy security and defence cooperation will not become collateral damage of Russia-focused legislation, while still advancing critical-technology and Indo-Pacific coordination. Coverage of the call is in Hindustan Times.
