Supreme Court tells CBSE to extend three-language relaxation to Class 6 students

The Supreme Court has directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to give Class 6 students the same relief under the CBSE three-language rule that has already been extended to Classes 7, 8 and 9. The order brings uniformity across middle-school grades for the current academic year.

What the order says

Under the relaxation, students will continue to study a third language, but they will not face a mandatory board examination in it when they reach Class 10. The court asked CBSE to apply the same arrangement to Class 6 in the ongoing academic session. Full enforcement of the three-language requirement has been deferred to 1 April 2027, giving schools and families more time to prepare.

Why the rule was challenged

CBSE’s move to make three languages compulsory, in line with the language formula of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, drew objections from parents and schools. They argued that introducing a new language requirement mid-way, with a board exam attached, would burden students who had not studied a third language from earlier grades, and that many schools lacked trained teachers. The petitioners pointed out that Class 6 had been left out of the relief granted to older classes.

What happens next

Schools affiliated with CBSE are expected to receive revised guidance from the board. Education experts say the deferral should help schools recruit teachers and develop material for a wider range of languages, though debate over how the formula applies in different states is likely to continue. The case adds to a wider national conversation on schooling, from exam reform to weather-related school closures this month. A report on the hearing is available at LiveLaw.
