British Sikh activist Jagtar Singh Johal released after nine years in Delhi jail

British Sikh activist Jagtar Singh Johal has been released from a Delhi prison after the Indian high court warned the government it would be found in contempt if it continued to hold him despite an 18 September order granting bail. Johal had been incarcerated for nine years without a full trial on alleged terrorist offences — a case that became a long-running flashpoint in UK–India diplomatic and human-rights debates and a symbol for campaigners of prolonged pre-trial detention.

Contempt warning forced compliance

On Thursday morning, the Delhi High Court made clear that further delay would amount to contempt of court. Campaigners had argued that Johal’s prolonged detention violated due-process norms and that successive British governments had not pressed hard enough for either a timely trial or release. Indian agencies have maintained that the charges relate to serious national-security allegations requiring extensive investigation and that bail conditions will still apply under domestic law once he leaves custody.

The release does not erase the underlying case. Prosecutors can still pursue trial, while Johal’s supporters say nine years without a concluded trial already inflicted irreversible harm on him and his family. Rights groups will watch whether bail conditions restrict travel or speech and how quickly courts list remaining proceedings in the coming weeks.

Diplomatic and legal fallout

London and New Delhi will now manage the political optics: the UK side is likely to welcome the release quietly, while India stresses judicial process over foreign pressure. Reporting on the court warning and release is in The Guardian.
