For the first time since 1998, both Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams will contest Asian Games finals in the same edition after the men survived Pakistan and the women had already booked their place. The double final berth crowns a high-pressure week for Indian hockey in Kakamigahara and renews a long-standing benchmark for administrators.
A rare double opportunity
The 1998 precedent has long been cited inside Indian hockey as proof that both programmes can peak together. Matching it again underlines depth across junior pipelines and senior high-performance camps, even after Thursday’s scare in the men’s semi-final against Pakistan exposed late defensive soft spots.
The women face a stern final opponent after topping their semi-final path, while the men prepare for South Korea or Malaysia. Parallel finals amplify media attention and raise the medal stakes for the sport’s funding cycle when teams return home.
What coaches will prioritise
Recovery windows, video review of late defensive lapses, and set-piece sharpness will dominate the short turnaround. Mentally, both squads must treat the finals as separate contests rather than a shared narrative that distracts from opponent-specific plans. Reporting: Sportstar.
Hockey India now turns to recovery and travel between venues after a compressed knockout schedule. Analysts tracking expected-goals data say India’s circle entries remain among the tournament’s best even when conversion dips under penalty-corner pressure. Ticket demand for the final sessions already spilled onto secondary markets, a sign that women’s hockey has crossed into mainstream appointment television for Indian sports audiences this fortnight.
Why 1998 still matters
Repeating a 28-year milestone gives Indian hockey a symbolic boost — but only golds will convert nostalgia into a defining Asian Games chapter worth the double billing. Federation officials said the double final also validates investment in women’s high-performance programmes that once lagged the men’s side in attention and resources. Fans in India already comparing line-ups and predicted scores have turned the twin finals into a national appointment viewing event.
