Sensex ends at 72,480, Nifty slips 0.4% as crude near $103 and FII selling weigh

Indian equities closed lower for a third straight session on Wednesday as elevated crude prices and foreign selling capped an early rebound. The Sensex today finished at 72,480.29, down 48.78 points or 0.07%, while the Nifty 50 slipped 95.75 points, or 0.42%, to 22,620.45.

Banks cushion, metals and pharma drag

The session opened firm, with the Nifty briefly above 22,800, before afternoon selling erased most gains. ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, InterGlobe Aviation, Wipro and Tech Mahindra led the Nifty gainers. Max Healthcare, Apollo Hospitals, SBI Life, Eternal and ONGC were among the biggest losers. Metal and pharmaceutical stocks each fell more than 1%, while private banks, PSU banks, realty and media rose between 1% and 2%.

Brent crude climbed 0.82% to about $103.43 a barrel. FIIs sold roughly ₹9,980 crore of Indian shares on Tuesday, their largest single-day outflow in about four months, and have pulled around $2.7 billion from equities in September so far. That pressure builds on the sharp 1,124-point Sensex slide on 28 September. Brokers said final-hour selling in healthcare and metals decided the close after the morning bounce faded.

September closes on a weak note

The Nifty recorded its weakest September since 2018 and ended the July–September quarter more than 5% lower. Bank Nifty outperformed, gaining about 0.69%. Market breadth was mixed: of 3,685 NSE stocks, 1,740 advanced and 1,813 declined.
