Kohli’s unbeaten 120, Gill’s 110 power India to 8-wicket win over West Indies in first ODI

India opened their home season with a commanding win in the India vs West Indies 1st ODI on Sunday, chasing down 296 with eight wickets and 50 balls to spare at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Virat Kohli finished unbeaten on 120 off 82 balls and captain Shubman Gill made 110 as India reached 300/2 in 41.4 overs.

West Indies set a competitive target

Gill won the toss and chose to bowl. Justin Greaves anchored the visitors with a maiden ODI hundred (101), John Campbell struck 62 off 60 balls and Amir Jangoo finished unbeaten on 58, lifting West Indies to 295/7. Kuldeep Yadav was India’s best bowler with 4/40 from his ten overs. India handed an ODI debut to spin all-rounder Naman Dhir, while Rohit Sharma and Kohli returned to the side.

Two centuries settle the chase

Gill reached his hundred off 96 balls and was eventually caught by Jewel Andrew off Roston Chase for 110 from 108 deliveries, with India on 225/2 in the 34th over. Kohli then took charge, racing past three figures and sealing the chase alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad (11 not out).

Kohli crosses 15,000 ODI runs

During the innings Kohli became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to pass 15,000 ODI runs, reaching the mark in his 303rd innings. Sportstar reported the knock as his 55th ODI hundred.

Why it matters: The three-match series is part of India’s build-up to the 2027 World Cup, and questions over the long-term roles of Rohit and Kohli have followed the team. A dominant chase led by the captain and Kohli is an emphatic answer for now. The second ODI is in Guwahati on 30 September and the third in New Chandigarh on 3 October.
