Russian missile and drone strikes kill at least seven in Ukraine; Kyiv power grid hit

Russia launched a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine on Wednesday, killing at least seven people and damaging energy and communications infrastructure in Kyiv and other regions, Ukrainian officials said. NATO aircraft were scrambled in Poland and Romania as the strikes unfolded near alliance airspace.

Kyiv hit as power grid targeted

Ukrainian authorities reported casualties and outages after overnight and morning strikes on the capital. Officials said Russia aimed at energy nodes and civilian areas, continuing a pattern of pressure on the power grid ahead of winter. Emergency crews worked through damaged apartment blocks and substations as casualty figures were updated through the day, and local governments urged residents to conserve electricity.

The assault comes days after strikes that killed civilians in Kyiv, Dnipro and Kharkiv, which we reported in our 28 September wrap. NATO condemned Moscow’s nuclear rhetoric while alliance jets monitored objects that crossed or approached neighbouring airspace during the barrage. Residents in several districts spent hours without power as repair crews assessed transformers and transmission lines.

Diplomacy and the battlefield

Kyiv renewed appeals for more air-defence systems and interceptor missiles. Moscow has not issued a detailed comment on the latest casualty counts. The air campaign remains the dominant daily threat for Ukrainian cities even as ground fighting continues along the eastern front.

Why India is watching

Energy shocks and Black Sea risk still feed into global oil and food prices that matter for Indian inflation and markets. Earlier context is in our aerial-war explainer. International agencies summarised the day’s toll via ABC News.
